B&B Locanda Pomarancio

Bed and Breakfast 'Locanda Pomarancio' is named after the late-Renaissance painter Antonio Circignani detto il Pomarancio (1560-1620), whose dramatic Deposition can be seen in the Eighteenth-Century church at the core of the medieval village of Mondaino, where the Locanda Pomarancio is situated.

The village of Mondaino is at the top of a hill 420 metres height above sea level, and is surrounded by the irregular, green reliefs of the Montefeltro, covered by olive-trees, vines and other plantations that enclose the many medieval castles of the country (Mondaino too, obviously, shows a huge castle with an amazing draw-bridge) and a large numbers of villages rich of arts, history and living, popular traditions. A deep, calm silence is the Lord of the country.

The B&B Locanda Pomarancio is to be appreciated particularly by those people willing to find out the natural, anthropological and cultural treasures of the Romagnolo-Marchigiano hinterland. It suggests to his guests unknown journeys between landscape and art, nature and history. The town of Urbino, one of the most renowned capitals of the Italian Renaissance, is only 25 kms. far from Mondaino; at the same distance stands the Roman centre of Pesaro, rich for his music culture and the Rossini festival in summer. The town of Cattolica-Gabicce, on the sea-coast, is only half-an-hour. Mondaino looks, towards the south of Italy, at the impressive mountains of the Marche (Nerone e Catria, more than 1.500 heights), and at the wide, shining mirror of the Adriatico sea, towards nord-east, with its many attractive seaside centres, such as Rimini (about 40 kms) and Riccione (30 kms.).

The B&B Locanda Pomarancio offers his guests a unique natural and cultural perspective over a part of Italy that demands his hosts taste, sensitivity and love of beauty.

For those who love the history of things...

The Locanda Pomarancio is built over a tufa rock, like most of the buildings of Mondaino. In ancient times men learnt to carve the tufa rock, getting out of it a tortuous web of caves or caverns that covered many uses: they were (and still are) useful to preserve food and wine but also to escape invaders and find security inside the communicating walls of the castle above.

Locanda Pomarancio too has its cave (see the picture): it is 30 ms. long, it descends of about 5 meters from the level of the ground and had many branches now obstructed. The enter of the cave is at the bottom of the basement over which, sustained by arcades, stands the above building, on three levels.

We have restored the whole building that still shows at each level the interventions of man in different times and for different ends. It was our dream to restore to life and beauty a dead thing. We believe we have succeeded in this effort, also thanks to the many people who helped us and shared this enterprise with us. Everytime that my wife and me look with an aesthetic attitude at our multifarious restored house, we feel happy and find it fine in every details.
